Blue Island DEF Facility

We’re happy to announce that Terra Consulting Group provided Civil and Architectural services to Musket Corporation (Love’s Travel Stops) for one of their Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) blend facilities.

To meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean Air rules, diesel engine manufacturers rely on DEF to treat the exhaust and greatly reduce emissions. Musket began a nationwide build-out of DEF blending facilities in 2014 and has opened more than 13 to date.

One of the DEF Blend facility locations is in Blue Island, IL.  The site has easy access to both I-294 & I-57 and is adjacent to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Rail line, allowing access to shipments by rail. The 3.5-acre site was formerly a lumber yard with many building structures - all but one were razed to make room for the new production building.

Ample space at the site allowed for a wetland detention basin at the main entrance for stormwater management as well as to provide a generous landscape buffer.  Bioswales and filter strips were constructed to improve water quality and reduce the amount of storm sewer needed. Recycled concrete from the site was utilized as a Best Management Practice by providing runoff storage and filtration at the facility.

Glad we could help make a difference for the Blue Island blending facility!
