The soil conditions at a site affect how a foundation for a site is designed, such is the case for Skyway Towers New Bass Lake site. As a result of extremely poor soil conditions a Caisson foundation was determined to be to uneconomical to install and as a result a mat foundation was designed and installed. The mat foundation required over 80,000 pounds of re-bar and took 3 days to assemble. The poor engineering properties of the soil resulted in a shallow foundation, only 4’ deep and has overall dimensions of 46’-6” x 46’-6”. Also, a special ground system was designed for the site to account for the poor resistivity of the soils at the site. The ground system required 60’ long chemical ground rods to be driven into the ground.
